UPVC fascia boards are now a very popular choice on many modern homes as they offer impressive durability against the elements. However, although plastic doesn’t rot or warp in the same way that wood can, it can still suffer damage from persistent exposure to wind, rain, UV and temperature variations. Happily, these effects can be minimised by using a simple yet effective maintenance program.
Cleaning
UPVC fascia needs to be kept clean to ensure no dulling cracking occurs. It is also wise to keep an eye out to see if any birds are frequenting the areas under the eaves. Even though fascia boards help to stop birds from nesting, determined birds can often find a way in, so be sure to inspect soffits, boards and gutters periodically and clean out any birds nests found.
Checking
It is very important that fascia boards continue to offer protection against the elements while still being able to flex. Therefore, it is wise to check fascias and soffits on a regular basis to see whether there are any signs of warping, cracking or loose fixings. Defects like these can be very serious as they can allow moisture into the brickwork that can quickly cause dampness or even structural damage.
Painting
Finally, many people paint their fascias when they start to look a little worn – don’t! The chemicals in the paint will attack and damage the plastic. Substituting tired-looking boards with replacements is a much better option.
