Living in a country that receives as much rainfall as we get here in Britain makes having effective gutters on our homes essential. Most people don’t think very hard about the material their gutters are made of; but that can be a big mistake. Guttering is available in several different materials, each with their own particular advantages and disadvantages.
Metal
Although metal is an aesthetically pleasing material to look at, it is not always the most practical solution. Cast iron guttering in particular can be very heavy so professional services will have to be called whenever any kind of repair or replacement work is needed.
Wooden
Wooden gutters are also attractive and have the benefit of being nowhere near as heavy as cast iron. However, because of the nature of the material’s surface, wooden gutters are not able to hold as much water as metal or plastic gutters. In addition, wooden gutters also require more maintenance than other materials. This means that, much like cast iron, wooden gutters lose in practicality what they offer in attractiveness.
Plastic
When it comes to finding a material that is simple to maintain and easy to replace, plastic guttering is a clear winner. Because plastic fabrication is so lightweight, all necessary maintenance tasks can be easily carried out by the home owner. This not only makes it easy to keep on top of household maintenance, but also saves money by not having to pay for professional services every time a gutter needs looking at.
