Modern plastic fascias and soffits offer numerous benefits over their wooden counterparts, while being just as aesthetically pleasing. They offer long-lasting protection against the weather, prevent birds and bats getting into the eaves, and give effective insulation.
uPVC fascia boards are commonly used in modern buildings, because of its longevity and durability against the elements. However, while plastic fascias don’t rot and warp in the way wood does, they can still become damaged – wind, rain, UV and temperature variations can all take their toll. However, this can be minimised with an effective maintenance program.
It’s important your fascia boards offer total protection against the elements, while still being able to flex (plastic reacts to heat and cold in the same way as metal). Check your fascias and soffits regularly for signs of warping, cracking or loose fixings. Any of these can let moisture into the brickwork or roof timbers, leading to dampness and even structural damage.
Just as with plastic cladding, fascia boards should be kept clean, as this helps stop dulling and cracking. Also, check for birds flying out from under the eaves. Although fascias help prevent birds nesting, it can still happen, so every 6 months inspect soffits, fascia boards and guttering carefully, knocking down any birds nests you find and clearing out any detritus such as leaves. Finish with a good rinse over with a proprietary uPVC cleaner.
If your fascias start looking tatty and dull, don’t be tempted to paint them – the chemicals will attack the plastic. Instead, replace the parts showing wear-and-tear. We at Bliby Plastics sell a range of fascias, including several with an attractive wood-grained finish.
