Many people associate plastic roofing sheets with ugly lean-tos and car ports that flap in the wind, but this is only because the builders had no skill or imagination. The truth is that a lot of the attractive glass roof structures you see have, in fact, been glazed with high performance polycarbonate plastic sheets.
This is especially true of public buildings, areas where children play and those which are subject to vandalism. In some places, a beautiful old church with mediaeval stained glass windows would be ripe for stone-throwing. Yet if the windows are covered with clear plastic sheets, those windows are safe – and light can still pass through as it did before. This is a much more attractive prospect than covering them in ugly wire mesh.
Another example would be a school with an outdoor classroom. These are often built like open conservatories, made to look as attractive as possible, and in areas where children play. Naturally, the children using them need to be sheltered. Glass glazing would be an unacceptable hazard, but plastic sheets do exactly the same job – and present a far safer environment.
Three major reasons why people choose plastic over glass are cost, weight and insulation. An Edwardian conservatory glazed with heavy glass panels places a lot of stress on the supporting structure. We at Bliby Plastics sell a wide range of polycarbonate plastic sheets, in all thicknesses. We can provide plastic wall cladding and other products.
