When you are about to replace plastic guttering, fascias or wall cladding, you do not want to waste money by opting for the least expensive products you can find. This is a kind of false economy that you will soon find yourself regretting. ‘You get what you pay for’ is an old adage but very true – plastic gutters that you might reasonably expect to last for quite a few years might become unusable after only a couple of years. How to fit an architrave

As well as supplying plastic cladding, fascias and wall cladding, many DIY suppliers will have available items such as architrave and trim. Architrave is the piece of wood or wood effect plastic which will cover the gap between door frame and wall. There are various styles of architrave available, some quite detailed and decorative, others quite plain really. As leading experts in plastic fabrication, we understand decorative features such as these.

Each piece of decor in the area must be chosen carefully in order to create a good balance. At Bliby Plastics we supply several different wood-effect styles from which you can choose the one that will suit your room best. Having selected the perfect architrave, you now need to install it. Under normal circumstance, architrave will finish at the floor. In some homes, however, it will end at the skirting board. Measure how long you will need each section of architrave but do be careful to ensure it is between five and ten millimetres away from the door casing. If it is too close to the door casing, you will have the added inconvenience of needing to cut around the door hinges.

Mark all lengths with the cut’s direction to avoid making the mistake of cutting it the wrong way. Also worth considering is assembling the frame on the floor first. Use an appropriate glue to secure the lengths together and screw it from the top so that the screw heads will not be seen.

Plastic and the environment

It could be argued that plastic is one of the least environmentally friendly materials around these days, when so many things are disposable. However, most, if not all companies who use plastic either as part or all of their manufacturing processes, have started to take their impact on the environment a lot more seriously in recent years.

There are, of course, many reasons why plastic has become a very popular material for the manufacturing of a wide range of household, DIY and industrial products. Plastic is light and can be utilised as a viable replacement for heavier materials. Iron is rarely used nowadays in the manufacturing of guttering, pipes and so on. Plastic guttering is easier to work with and more durable than iron which will eventually rust. Industrial strength pipes are used by water supply companies to cut down the need for frequent repair and maintenance. At Bliby Plastics we supply plastic guttering, fascias and soffit boards for DIY use, but we also supply water pipes to be used by water companies.

At the moment, the majority of the recycling of plastic in Britain is the reprocessing (rather than recycling) of process scrap that occurs when a manufacturer produces plastics. The polymers left over are reprocessed in a way that is easy and economical. The reason for this is that the polymers are reasonably uncontaminated and there is a steady and reliable supply. The amount of process scrap in Britain is roughly a quarter of a million tonnes. All but approximately 5% of this amount is reprocessed.

Plastic in farming

As well as being used to create lighter and more durable gutters, fascias, soffit boards and so on, plastic can be put to use in a surprisingly wide range of rural areas in the UK. One such part of the rural scene that benefits from the use of plastic is pig farming.

As a plastic fabrication company, we provide guttering and soffits; we have been making pig feeders for more than 25 years. Since we are based in the south east of England where the majority of pig-farming is centred, we know what pig farming requires most so our pig feeders are constructed from polypropylene, which is known for its durability.

This is achieved by making the trough raised, this stops the pigs from pulling feed out onto the ground where it would be trampled down and wasted.

Alternatives to glass

Moving house is always a worrying business. It is rated as one of the three top most stressful events in your life. The last thing you need then is yet another problem to add to the list. A way of keeping down the cost of the move might be to dismantle the garden shed and take it with you to your new residence if one is not already available, or falling apart and will only be useful for burning on Bonfire Night.

Then another minor disaster occurs, one of the shed’s windows break. Some budget sheds unfortunately only provide very thin glass to keep the cost down. Check the fascia board before selling one’s property

When selling one’s property, the fascia board – the panel immediately below the roof – is often missed off the list of home improvements necessary to attract potential buyers. A worn or improperly attached fascia can however lead to long-term damage to a property. In addition, worn, damaged, or even incongruous-looking fascias can undermine a property’s aesthetic appeal.

Fascias are designed to protect that vulnerable part of the property where the brickwork meets the edge of the roof. If a fascia is defective this can lead to the property being exposed to a whole range of destructive elements such as frost, water, and intense heat. The dangers of failing to protect the outside of a property

Most householders would be quite rightly concerned about potential long-term structural damager should they spot rainwater leaking into their property.

It is however equally important to check that rainwater falling directly outside the property is also managed effectively.

A property’s main external lines of defence against rainwater lie in its roof, its guttering, its fascias, and its soffits. If any of these defences are worn, blocked or damaged, it can spell disaster for the health of not only of the external walls, but also, via deep-set soil saturation, of the property’s very foundations.

What is uPVC and why is it used in the building trade?

uPVC, or unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, is found extensively in items used by the construction trade such as guttering, fascias and wall cladding.

UPVC is essentially a hardened version of PVC, one of many specially engineered petroleum-based plastics first developed for commercial use in the early part of the 20th century. It is the deliberate absence of softening agents – known as ‘plasticisers’ – that leads to the production of rigid UPVC.

Like many plastics, UPVC is extremely durable and hard-wearing. It is also waterproof, mould-resistant and easy to keep clean. UPVC is further favoured by the building trade for its high tensile strength, and the fact that its malleability during production means that it can be machined into a wide range of differently-shaped, specialist components.

UPVC has, in addition, the advantage of being available in a wide range of colours, from white through to a wood-grain effect. This makes UPVC ideal for, say, replacing wooden fascias without having to compromise the overall aesthetic appeal of a building. We stock uPVC fascia boards as part of our broad range.

Finally, UPVC has a good resistance to UV light, a quality lacking in other plastics and one which has been a factor in previously causing guttering and other exposed household features to deteriorate.
