Plastic guttering is one of those ubiquitous products you typically never notice. The phrase “can’t see the wood for the trees” applies in a slightly different context to its usual meaning.
There are many reasons why plastic is the material of choice for guttering. Most people would expect this is solely cost based. The truth is that cost is a substantial benefit of using plastic guttering but far more important are the physical properties of plastic which make it the best material for this use by a large margin.
One of the major benefits of plastic is it can be manufactured in large single sections that can easily be cut to size. When dealing with any type of fixture that must be waterproof, there is one simple rule in place, the fewer joins the better. To be clear, modern guttering is very easy to join and waterproof, however, as age takes its toll the first area to fail in any waterproof structure will typically be a join. There are other materials that can be manufactured in large sections but these typically will cost more and frequently be heavier than the popular plastic material.
