Whilst many properties have fascias that are made from wood, most building experts agree that wood is far from being an ideal fascia material.
Firstly, wood requires a great deal of periodic maintenance, including treating with a weatherproof sealant. In some older properties where the wooden fascias may well have been painted over with several coats of gloss, it may not even be possible for the wood to absorb the sealant.
Secondly, wooden fascias require regular inspections for any signs of damp or rot as, even with the utmost care, wood is still susceptible to such infiltrations.
A preferred alternative material for fascias is UPVC plastic – a tough, lightweight, and weatherproof substance that requires virtually no long-term maintenance.
The question often asked when installing UPVC fascias on older properties is whether it is acceptable to just use those UPVC fascia boards that are designed to simply clip over existing fascias; or whether it is preferable to remove the old fascias completely prior to carrying out the new installation.
Contrary to popular belief, the answer should not be based simply on the skills of the installer. Rather, it is dependent on the condition of the original fascias. If they are still reasonably sound then they should be able to support clip-on fascia boards. If not then the old fascias should definitely be removed and fascia boards used instead which are designed to attach directly to the rafters.
At Bliby Plastics, as a leading plastic fabrication company, we have a wide range of all types of UPVC fascias at great value prices.
